The Americas’ 12mR fleet, based in Newport, RI is comprised of yachts from all divisions, representing the rich history of America’s Cup racing with Vintage, Traditional, Modern and Grand Prix designs sailing throughout New England each season from Newport to Nantucket to Martha’s Vineyard and Long Island Sound.
This diverse fleet showcases the evolution of racing yachts from the oldest (Onawa, US-5) built in 1928 to the newer “plastic fantastics” (Legacy, KZ-5 & New Zealand, KZ-3) launched in 1986. Newport is home to five America’s Cup defenders– Columbia, US-16 (1958), Weatherly, US-17 (1962), Intrepid, US-22 (1967 & 1970), Courageous, US-26 (1974 & 1977) and Freedom, US-30 (1980).
Annual 12 Metre racing events include prestigious regattas held at the New York Yacht Club (Newport), the Ida Lewis Yacht Club (Newport), the Edgartown Yacht Club (Martha’s Vineyard), the Opera House Cup (Nantucket) and the Museum of Yachting’s Annual Classic Yacht Regatta (Newport). The 12 Metre North American Championships are held in Newport each year, typically during the third week of September. With the yachts berthed at Bannister’s Wharf, accessible to sailors and spectators alike, this event recalls the heyday atmosphere of 12 Metre America’s Cup Racing in Newport from 1958 to 1983.
